ZONE 8 Crawly Creatures

The star attractions of the Crawly Creatures exhibit are the world’s biggest marine, land and migratory crab species. The stars include the Giant Japanese Spider Crab, the Robber Crabs and the Christmas Island Red Crabs.

These creatures have crawled and scrambled their way here from around the world where they have become part of the UnderWater World family.

Did you know?
  - The Giant Japanese Spider Crab is the largest living
marine arthropod. Fully grown, this giant animal can reach
a leg span of almost 4 metres, a body size of up to 37cm and
a weight of up to 20
kg
.
  - The Christmas Island Red Crabs are currently facing an
invasion of the very worst kind.
These world-famous crabs
are under threat from ‘super-colonies’ of the non-native
     yellow crazy ant.
   - Coconut Crabs are famous for their annual migration to the
sea in order to lay their
eggs in the ocean. During the
migration, the crabs cover the routes to the coast so
densely that they can be seen from the air.
